TV Specials for All Seasons
Panel: Ramin Zahed (Animation Magazine, USA), Rick Mischel (Mainframe Entertainement, Canada), Philippe Alessandri (Tele Images Kids, France), Gaspard De Chavagnac (Dargaud Marina, France), Ruth Fielding (Lupus Films, UK) and Gulia Filppelli (Rai Trade, Italy).

TV Specials have been mostly recognized for their “self contained” nature. Series on the other hand, are more characterized by their serial nature. The length of series varies between 26 and 22 half hours.// usually takes 2 to 3 weeks trial on the market. Cartoon Cartoon on the Cartoon Network surveys directly the market by making children vote for specific pilots.

TV specials that are made in Lebanon have been mostly classified under preventive/awareness campaigns, and short personal statements (Future Television, Animation Department).

Whereas, in the United States of America, tv specials are more Christmas specials, Halloween, Successful songs (i.e. The Magic Flute), sport specials (Super Ball), short biographies (Martin Luther King Day), ect..

Single specials are usually called a “one off”. They are not based on series that are either of a periodical or of a thematic structure.

The story of one offs is generally, as it was mentioned before, self contained. A few exemples:
- old known stories. (“public domain”) such as Tom Sawyer, or The Magic Flute.
- They can be evergreen specials, watched every year, at a very speicifc time such as chritmas, such as Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer, or the Snowman.
- Again, another popular public domain title is toys: Barbie, realeased by Mattel (75min in CGI), combines both the popular toy, Barbie, and old know stories such as The Nutcracker, and Rapuzel.

What distributors want:
- pre sold awareness: based on popular themes that are part of the general consciousness.
- Holiday themes

TV specials have very particular promotions, using as promotional items ice cream cakes and flavors, fast food toys, balloons, and costumes.
Again, Specials can be pilots for upcoming series, or movies, or seasonal festivals. They get developed according to their popularity.
In Japan on the other hand, many cartoons are based on comic books. the feature film, “Ghost in the Shell” was a comic book, and later became an animation piece, as well as the award winning film, “Spirited Away” .
